POETIC MOMENT
"The Snow Globe of the Future"

I once had a "Snow Globe of the Future"
That I looked upon only once in my life.
It came on a rainy day with black birds—
They had camped not far outside my room
Upon the window perch where they sat.
With one shake of the globe, a scene came.
...And I saw a courtroom just like those today
But instead of the victim trying the guilty
It was the victim who was defending himself
Against charges of accusing the guilty one,
As a result defaming his reputable character
And forever hurting his feelings, the horror!
Alas, the guilty one is never brought to jail
For he is never tried with any type of crime
And even so, it is better to let the guilty free
Because deep down, they have good feelings
And jail is too mean of a punishment for him.
...Again I shook the globe and saw a new sight
Of cheap clay bricks and laughing children-
Running up and down the halls of education
Where the posters are not of Washington,
Hancock, Jefferson or even Colonel Travis
But of semi-modern heroes such as Chavez,
Hussein, Murtha, Boxer, Sheehan, Castro
And many of the war hero John F. Kerry.
The textbooks speak not of what was done
But if a person was gay, bisexual or "weird"
The latter was what was once called "straight"
In a time when people used to be married
Instead of growing children in glass tubes.
The flag flies high and proud from its perch
Over the smelly discarded items of the day
And the black plastic can call it a "friend."
...With disgust, I turned away to shake again
Where I saw a green field under a blue sky,
Bringing a true smile to my face for once.
That is, until I see giant trucks cross the land,
Stopping smack in the middle of the green.
Out of the doors come a slew of gentlemen
Holding shovels in both clearly dirty hands.
They dig for hours and hours into the land
Until a gapping hole is formed in the middle
Where they turn the trucks' back towards.
Tiny fingers emerge first, followed by hands
And the bodies of tiny babies without life
Their severed heads pour in with the throng
Into the hole below with the community.
Without a tear or even some solemn words,
The men return with the bloodied shovels
And cover the youths with the lifeless dirt
Lifelessness above those who couldn't live.
...Gorge rising rapidly, I shake the scene away
To find two churches before mine eyes
The first, on the left, is painted green
For it the walls are made up of money
And the floors are carpeted in fine silk.
The candles are made of shining gold
As are the crosses, the doors, the lights
And the souls of the church's patrons.
The church on the right is underground
Where the floors are of cold concrete,
The walls of the same lifeless material,
And the lighting screams of carefulness.
For the troops walk over the cold ceiling
Some many feet above the foundation
Where the living inside scream of truth,
The souls are saved from the eternal fire
And from the government's large eyes.
The governor walks into the left building
With a loud, deafening sermon he shouts
About how to find the subversive ones
And how to slaughter them once found.
For there is no need for a lesson of good
Because nothing is wrong with being bad
And to force views upon another is wrong.
...With tears upon my face and down below
Where they fell over the course of viewing
Upon fresh vomit split upon the room,
I hurled the globe against the wall ahead.
It shattered into pieces of black smoke
That hissed and cackled as they sunk
Through the floor of my smelling room
Perhaps to the very depths of the fire-
A place future had come to worship
From what I had seen in the sad globe.
...And yet, I knelt down to my shaky knees,
Caring not of the floor's scented contents.
Hands together and head bowed in respect,
I thank Him for what I had seen that day
Because although I know that it will come,
And many shall fall upon troubled ends,
The time of great change is right behind
And a change unlike any other is nigh.

I do not believe that our nation will head in that direction but I suppose it is possible that you could see it that way based on how things are right now.
