America, Meet WMD
Wednesday, June 21, 2006
The following is the text of an article today from CNSNews.com by CNSNews Senior Editor Melanie Hunter with reaction in brackets similar to what RUnderground writer Brian Erskine did May 11 regarding a news report on wiretapping by the USA Today.

Document Details WMD Recovered In Iraq, Santorum Says

(CNSNews.com) - Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) and Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-Mich.) announced Wednesday the finding of over 500 munitions or weapons of mass destruction, specifically "sarin- and mustard-filled projectiles," in Iraq. [For most who support the war and knew what kind of person Saddam Hussein was, this is actually not a surprise - we all held out waiting for this day to come when it would finally be announced that WMD (like RBI in baseball, writing WMD's is incorrect because it would be writing "weapons of mass destructions" and that's just wrong, folks) were found in Iraq. I personally thought that Hussein might have shipped them over to Syria or Iran but apparently he just left them in Iraq instead of doing the smart thing and passing the torch to another country that hates America]

Reading from unclassified [something that guys like Senator John Kerry would probably love to have read but were not able to ... kinda makes some of their comments look a bit stupid now, huh?] portions of a document developed by the U.S. intelligence community, Santorum said, "Since 2003, coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions which contain degraded mustard or sarin nerve agent. [Just for the record, let's repeat that: "coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions"] Despite many efforts to locate and destroy Iraq's pre-Gulf War chemical munitions, filled and unfilled pre-Gulf War chemical munitions are assessed to still exist."

[One more time now: "coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions"] According to Santorum, "That means in addition to the 500, there are filled and unfilled munitions still believed to exist within the country." [Holy cow - there's more! Wow, Mr. Kerry must be a bit scared after claiming that the war in Iraq was "founded on a lie."]

Reading from the document, Santorum added, "Pre-Gulf War Iraqi chemical weapons could be sold on the Black Market. Use of these weapons by terrorist or insurgent groups would have implications for coalition forces in Iraq. The possibility of use outside of Iraq cannot be ruled out. The most likely munitions remaining are sarin- and mustard-filled projectiles. [Pretty nasty stuff, there.] And I underscore filled."

Santorum said the "purity of the agents inside the munitions depends on many factors, including the manufacturing process, potential additives and environmental storage conditions."

While acknowledging that the agents "degrade over time," the document said that the chemicals "remain hazardous and potentially lethal." [Therefore, they are still quite dangerous and could have been used against us when coalition forces overtook Iraq back in 2003. But again, if Hussein had done that, the whole world would have known that he had WMD and was therefore lying about not having them. And of course, most people with a brain can figure out that if a guy violates 16 U.N. resolutions, he's probably not the type of guy you can trust.]

The media has reported that "insurgents and Iraqi groups" want to "acquire and use chemical weapons," Santorum noted. [Gee, this isn't a surprise.]

The Pennsylvania senator called the finding "incredibly" significant. [This is a HUGE understatement. It is more than just "incredibly" significant - it's monumental. It completely destroys the "Bush lied, thousands died" slogan that has been used by war detractors for the past few years. It makes every anti-war Democrat look like a complete moron. It would mean a huge shift in power in Washington and quite possibly, a huge boost for Republicans in midterm elections over credibility-removed Democrats. It's waaaay more than just "incredibly" significant, Rick.]

"The idea that, as my colleagues have repeatedly said in this debate on the other side of the aisle, that there are no weapons of mass destruction is in fact false," [HALLEUJAH! HALLEUJAH! HALLEUJAH! HALLEUJAH!] Santorum said. "We have found over 500 weapons of mass destruction and in fact have found that there are additional chemical weapons still in the country."

[Needless to say but I will say it anyway, a huge number of prominent Democrats at every level of government (and a few college professors and public school teachers across the nation as well as numerous news media outlet writers) now have a huge amount of egg on their face. Enjoy it, folks. Those of us who have had confidence in the war, our president and the information he had regarding the insane and destructive agenda of Saddam Hussein do not. And rightfully so.]

Why hasn't anyone else picked up on this? Mostly because these are munitions that we already knew about, munitions that were talked about in the Duelfer (ISG) report, which was even commissioned by the Bush Administration, and which reported: "While a small number of old, abandoned chemical munitions have been discovered, ISG judges that Iraq unilaterally destroyed its undeclared chemical weapons stockpile in 1991. There are no credible indications that Baghdad resumed production of chemical munitions thereafter, a policy ISG attributes to Baghdad’s desire to see sanctions lifted, or rendered ineffectual, or its fear of force against it should WMD be discovered."

What Santorum is referring to here are exactly those munitions, munitions that have degraded to the point where they are no longer deliverable in any military capacity. They're munitions that the Bush Administration also knew about, and after hearing about them still said: "The chief weapons inspector, Charles Duelfer, has now issued a comprehensive report that confirms the earlier conclusion of David Kay that Iraq did not have the weapons that our intelligence believed were there." (statement issued Oct 7, 2004)

All told, this isn't news, and it isn't vindication for the Bush Administration--it's a desperate move for Santorum, who is well behind in his Senate re-election bid.

I can definately say that I am not surprised! It's about freakin time that someone admitted they were there in my opinion. My question is...why wasn't this all over the news?! (And I can answer my own question with two words-Liberal Media). As for the comments Brian, they were definately you and I enjoyed every one of them! Keep up the good work and I miss working with you. Let me know how things are going with College Republicans- I miss it!
